(Jenny) Last week a shop in the Xintiandi Mall caught my eye – EXCEPTION de MIXMIND. The tender earth tones, the modern design of the clothes showcased in the display windows and especially the large range of knitted material (which I personally love and now even more as winter is coming) aroused my interest. I just had to enter the store and find more about the brand. I was surprised to hear that the designer and founder of the label, Ma Ke, is among the top ten designers in China. She established the brand in 1996 and is the first and most successful designer brand in China. There are over 60 retail stores located in major cities across China. With her fashion Ma Ke wants to redefine the values of fashion and to infuse the world with an oriental spirit. The apparel embodies a contemporary artistic lifestyle based on oriental philosophy. Eco-friendly materials, earthbound aesthetic and elegance characterize the brand. Ma Ke also founded the label Wuyong (engl. useless) in 2006, which was presented on Paris Fashion Week in 2007.

This is a quieter location only a short distance from the Main Street. It is up an alley, so there's a short walk for bringing your luggage to/from the hotel. The hostess is very nice and works very hard to accommodate your needs. The rooms is clean and basic; it was one of the few hotels in this area that could accommodate a family of 4. There's large windows (no window screens), soap, towels. The shower in the bathroom is the type that floods the entire bathroom, so shower slippers are helpful. They have communal slippers in the rooms, but I brought my own. Our breakfast was included: either American breakfast with eggs, toast, ham, bacon, tea or Continental breakfast with "pancake", which is banana crepe with chocolate sauce. Service was quick. We arranged a half-day tour to Cat Ba National Park, and it was definitely worthwhile. Beautiful hike! We also went rock climbing at Hidden Valley, after stopping by Cat Ba Climbing, which is 1 block away. Best nearby restaurants: Vien Duan for local seafood and the nearby pizza place if you're craving pizza (my kids loved it) I would recommend this place for a family of 4 looking for a budget, quiet hotel off the main strip.

The number of migrants using a perilous new sea route across the Mediterranean from Morocco to Spain has more than tripled in a year, it has emerged. More than 3, 300 refugees crossed to Europe from the North African country in the first four months of this year - compared to just over a thousand in the same period in 2016.
